Buyers Guide Primer

Lets walk through the differences between our Keyboards to help you make an educated decision for your keyboard purchase.

We carry a variety of keyboards depending on your personal needs. We have two main categories of keyboard types. The first is Kits and Sets. Lets discuss the differences. You will see these

Kits

Kits are your standard type of opensource Keyboard. The benefit of these is you can easily build your own and tylor it with your own MicroController of your choice and build this at home and typically support either the Promicro, Picro, or the newer SEED foot prints of microcontrollers. Most keyboards you find fit this category as they are easy to build.

Pros

  • Easy to build

  • Easy to repair

  • Simple design to make it Cheaper to build in small batches

Cons

  • Most Expensive option to build

  • Does not have ESD support

Sets

Sets are what we call fully completed keyboards that have the microcontroller built into the board itself instead of having a seperate daughter board. This is what many opensource keyboards are starting to switch over to.

Pros

  • Cleaner more polished looks over Kit keyboards since its all built-in to the board.

  • ESD protection so typically get longer life out of these boards

  • Lower overall production cost

Cons

  • More difficult to repair

  • More complex design makes higher production costs in small batches
