Layout, Switch, & Keycap Options
So many Options!!!
The best part, and also the most confusing when starting out, is all your options. This opens up several opprotunties to help you fully customize and get the most out of your keyboard. In short, their are no wrong ways, just your way. If you are starting out, don't get overwhelmed, instead just stick with the basics and you will eventually find what best suites your needs.
Layouts
Lets look at our first and most obvious choice and that is the layout. You will find that we carry a variety of layout options to try and suite the needs of most. Is one layout better than another? Yes and no, yes only applies to you. What I mean is while one person may find they need a number row, you may find you don't need that at all and prefer a more compact option. Likewise you may find a perticular thumb cluster works better for you and your hands than someone else. In short find out what works for your needs and you can always change these down the road.
We recommend trying different layouts using tools such as the Split Keyboard Compare tool where you can see how different layouts look, compare them, and you can print these off to scale and see how they fit your hands.
Switches
Their are 2 main category of switches. Here is a video where we go into these types and how they differ.
Its important to know that all keyboards sold at Turkeyboards are low profile. We do this as its our preferred switch category.
Keycaps
Keycaps are the little hats that go on top of your switches that your fingers hit as you type. We highly recommend high quality keycaps. Your keycaps are the hardest hitting part on your keyboard since your fingers are always punching them. The type of material and how they are made really reflect how durable they are.
The good news is they are available in a WIDE veriety of colors, legends, and you can even order custom keycaps sets.
